Recording Vocals Over the Drum Tracks in Fruity Loops
FL studio frustrating the shit out of me.
I'm venting and I got a question in this one.
I'm really trying to get used to the FL studio layout and workflow... but it's really hard!
The way the tracks are organized vertically instead of left to right... The way you can't organize the tracks like it's all out of order and shit. One track is a kick, next is a synth, next is a snare... why can't I click and drag it to where I want it to be?
And I don't know if I'm doing it wrong, but like I'm trying to keep my instruments separate so I'm doing a new pattern for each sound. So for my kick drum I hit + for a new pattern (4 in this case) and then I start clicking the little buttons in the sequencer view or whatever that's called. Then FL just starts playing a bunch of random notes for no reason. I delete the notes on the sequencer thing and fl still plays random kick drum notes. I go into piano roll view to see if there is anything going on in there and there is nothing at all. So I have no clue what's triggering these kick drums... like there is a pattern to it but it makes no sense cause nothing is clicked in in either view.
And i'm playing my beats in song mode, like I said with each instrument on it's own track..
I'm also having problems with adding effects. When I click on the mixer view, everything is coming out of the same track 1. WTH? What happened to regular, normal mixers with every instrument coming out of it's own channel? How can I add effects to an individual sound without affecting the entire song... I watche video tutorials and they all put their effects in one of the 8 slots in mixer view. I don't want that. I have Soundtoys I want to insert on individual channels.
Man is this program counterintuitive.
Ok so I just realized that for some dumb ass reason some of my samples play in echo... like kick drums and shit. It's so dumb I don't get it. Why does someone want a drum pack to be in echo and it keeps going forever like kick-kick-kick-kick-kick... and then everything gets jumbled together to sound like shit. Why the hell do these samples keep playing in loop it seems like?
glad you figured out the sound issue...
as for the mixer effects... make sure you set the FX channel to the track you want in the "channel setting" window.. When you load a sample/instrument..the FX channel is the little box in the upper right hand corner in the channel settings panel..
Once you play with it you will settle in...or you might not like it... I don't think there is any DAW with a MORE intuitive user interface...that is why I stuck with it
Thanks, yeah it seems like I'm gonna get used to it eventually, I'm learning fast cause I already have experience using Reason and Pro tools. I only wished that the sequencer was as easy as Protool's or Reason's where all you do is make music in song mode and you double click a bar to edit the notes and hit escape or whatever to go back to song view. It's so simple, yet so convenient.
Another thing, when I record now, it seems that it's recording everything off, like there's some type of delay or quantization going on after I record. Is there a button that's doing that?
I think the problem is user error. I have been using it for 11 years and I never have any of these problems. What kind of sound card are you using, and computer?

No man it's not that I got a nice studio man using Digi 003 factory mixer, quad core, XP pro... Macbook etc..
The notes are just not lining up right after I play it I think it's some setting cause it wasn't doing it before. I guess after 11 years of using it, I wouldn't be complaining either lol. I've only been makin music as a whole for 5 years or less. I wish I started with FL though cause I started with Pro tools and still to this day it runs like crap and crashes all the time.
also check your snap setting on your recording panel right next to the transport buttons... that might be what you're dealing with in regards to the quantization issue.
What are you trying to record?

You need to watch youtube tutorials on FL Studio.....coming off of Logic 9 I found FL studio difficult in the beginning also.....Click help>contents...and take your time reading it. Its worth it once you learn everything.

Thanks man, that's exactly what it was. I was recording a kick.
I'm really starting to dig this program. I just went through all the effects and figured out how it works. This program has some really cool effects.

This is probably because you havn't unchecked the "Use Loop Points" button the samples settings. So on the step sequencer, click the sample so the litle grey box of options come up, and then unclick "use loop points" - this will eliminate the loop.

Agree to some extent. I'v been using it for 7 years now - however since you are new to the platform you are bound to find it somewhat frustrating because like anything you have to learn it.
Best thing to do is read the manual, watch tutorials and experiment with it.

Fl studio's workflow is like no other, that is, when you now your hotkeys.
Hit F4 to make a new pattern. It will make a pop up to name and color the new pattern.
1-4 are the quick zoom keys when you have the piano roll or sequencer open.
F2 is to rename/color the current pattern.
Its very easy to route instruments into the mixer. When you have the instruments or instrument selected in the stepsequencer window that you want to put on a channel (the little green light will be on next to their name) click on the channel you want it/them in and press ctrl+L.
On a side note, the default compressor in fl sucks cause it has no visual feedback and doesnt sound nice, grab a better one!

When recording you have to disable the send of the channel you are recording to the main fader in mixer view. Otherwise you'll hear an echo (annoying)
The work flow is weird in FL but once you get it you'll realize thats its very well thought out.
Just take your time. Read help, watch youtube.
You can get it. I did.
I had to rewire.
My main issue is composing is such a PITA for me personally in FL.
I LOVE making drums. Just hit f4 and a new pattern opens up where you have all the drums you dragged in already..its great, the feel is killer..etc. Then you just paste the blocks in the order you want to sequence, and done.
But recording audio into Edison is a PITA when it comes to editing. Compared to Cubase where I can easily edit audio.
Same with Synth parts..it is easy to use the piano roll, but actually recording a longer part over sequenced drum patterns and editing it is just not as easy as I prefer.
So I just do drums and sampling in FL and everything else in Cubase. Basically FL is IMO the best software sampler you can have. The secret for me is to keep all that stuff in pattern mode and only use song mode to sequence the patterns.
My big question is how to properly bounce WAVS out of FL so the files are going to line up perfectly in Cubase. I want to import the audio from the rewired project into Cubase for the mix stage.
Fl is and will always be the best and easiest sequencer IMO ... I can get done in fl quicker than I can with my mpc maybe because I been with fl since the third edition but if u have any questions u can reach me personally at one of my links below

If you could post any advice on best ways to bounce and arrange full songs that would be great. That always eluded me.
That being said..if you have some good go to synths, a killer audio editor like Cubase/PT..etc..then all you probably need is FLstudio for everything else. The control it gives you on your drums and samples is NASTY.

Are you using single shots, loops, vstis, or recording directly to fl with your own instruments?
F5 toggles between your playlist and and step sequencer.
F9 brings up your mixer.
Lets say you insert an Instrument, the channel setting window appears on the screen which has a lot of different functions and options, if you want to send that specific "instrument" or "single shot sound" to the mixer click the top left corner of the Channel Setting Box and "Assign to free mixer track" it will then automatically open up your mixer and display where your instrument or sound is..you can move it from channel to channel by selecting and then holding the ALT key and move from left to right with your movement keys..When placing an FX make sure to be in the correct channel and not the Master. In the same channel settings box there is a little display on the top right that shows Fx and the number on the mixer track if you want to send certain sounds to a channel with a mix then just click that display and select channel of choice.
I usually try to keep drums seperate from instruments on the step sequencer for example:
Instruments on Patterns 1-10 and drums on patter 15-20 just to have room for any additional changes to a complete sequence within the track. (just an idea) and it keeps things organized, make sure to label and title each Insert and Pattern name on the playlist to make it easier..
if your using loops/fx you can just throw into the Track view in the Playlist and organize and arrange in the patter view within the playlist...make sure the sounds you are pulling in from your browser are not Kick, Snare, Hihat single loops that continue to play if thrown on the step sequencer.
PM me if anything.

Does the music you work on contain lots of changes, drops, or breakdowns?
I love using FL for sequencing it's simple and has lots of little functions that make things easier, if you use a lot of loops or Fx within your music I find the Track display in the playlist very easy to add, edit, and completely manipulate your audio wav clips if your using single shots then the step sequencer is a lot better, if you want to bounce a quick idea from there along with a simple mix, after you have what you want you can select all tracks in the step sequencer by holding shift and clicking towards the right of their label which are the little green lights, once you have selected the ones you want go the mixer and right click the 1st track go to Link Selected Channels and choose Starting from this track and it will automatically layout all your tracks in the Mix Windows for further mixing and then you can bounce CTRL > R, name, save, and then you can either export as a Whole or there is an option in the Render Window towards the bottom right that says "Split Mixer Tracks" and it will bounce each track in the mixer seperately!
Awesome..thanks man..I knew it was a little complex to get it the right way. Thanks again guys.
I am toggling between one shots as my drum samples and using VSTIs that I want to play over the entire sequence.

I don't know if this will help you or not, but when you edit a channel in the step editor, press Control-L and it will assign that instrument to the next free mixer channel. That way you can put an insert effect on just that channel and also just control that instrument using just that channel fader etc.
A lof of people wish this was done automatically in FL Studio but it's not.
I also find FL Studio sort of hard to use. I never quite understand exactly what it's doing or where to find all of the commands. There's tons of different places where different commands are hiding.
I also prefer a more multitrack-mixer/track oriented program. FL Studio in some ways is more like a Tracker and it gets confusing for me.
But I still use it at times because I like using the step editor just for samples. But then again, ever since I got MOTU BPM, I haven't used it so much. But on the other hand, FL Studio is less glitchy about soundcards and buffers than MOTU BPM.
But sometimes I think Image-Line should just focus on their VSTi's instead of the DAW. I like Toxic Biohazard and some of their other VSTi's, but each one seems like it could use some enhancements. But Image-Line keeps kicking out more and more VSTi's without really improving the old ones so much.
So, for bouncing a VST down to audio (like esp since the synths go off and on since I didn't buy the whole pack) I would send to channel FX (say 2) and on that channel add Edison as an effect. Then I would just click record button in Edison and hit play on my transport? I do this, but it leaves a space in the beginning so I have to go in and drag the loop point in edison so it doesn't include the blank space in the beginning and make everything out of sync. What bothers me more is that I can't seem to find a loop disable button! I just want to record one pass.... not over and over and over and over. How do I just record one pass and without having to do all this editing and crap. In Pro tools you just send signal through a bus, record arm the track you're recording on, select input, hit play/record and bam.

1) Press the record-icon below a channel (it looks like a disc)
2) Name your recording
3) Press record then press play

Thanks!
Very important - I have something I've been trying to figure out and looked online but didn't find anything (search overload). I want to double the length of a pattern and all it's instruments and notes. I know you can adjust the length of a pattern, but how can you double say from 8 bars to 16 bars without having to individually copy/past for each instrument?
This problem in Fl studio is so frustrating
Hello I am running fl studio 12 the producer edition on my hp laptop and are recording songs and vocals for a cd I am looking to release in the next few days although I am really confused and messed about about what I think maybe a glitch in the software. For some reason wen I play songs that I've saved recorded my vocals blank out throughout the song maybe once or twice in weird spots. I kno all of my work and words are saved because it does not blank out my words/vocals in the same spot everytime during playback. I am really confused and dnt kno what to do as me and my boy who has mastered fl over the last few years have tried almost everything. Some one please let me kno if you have any ideaswhat the problem may be
sounds odd sure its not a hardware issue or a problem when it was recorded?
I have had strange problems with things getting louder, samples playing at random and the like and it was because i had the record button on while i was doing some mixing stuff and all the tweaks and vsts and sample triggers got recorded as automation and then would play when i played the song, took me a bit to figure out what was happening it looked like a ghost was ****ing with my ****, got rid of it by deleting it from the automation menu in the browser.
